Common questions
What should I navigate with?
Boatie plans your day and keeps your boat sorted. For getting from A to B, use proper charts and your plotter.
How good is the Day for it score?
The score is there to help you pick your day. It reads the forecast wind, gusts, swell and tide for your home water and your boat, and shows the reasons behind the number. Forecasts can be wrong, so check the MetService marine forecast, look at the water and make your own call. The skipper's call is the one that counts.
Does it work without signal?
Mostly. Tides, rules, ramps, fuel stops and your own records are all on your phone. The forecast shows the last one downloaded and how old it is. The map pictures need signal.
Does Emergency need a subscription?
Emergency and safety stay open to everyone, subscription or not, and they keep working after your trial ends.
Where do the tides come from?
Predictions from Toitū Te Whenua LINZ, built into the app. Smaller spots are worked out from the nearest main port using LINZ offsets. They're not official tide tables under Maritime Rules Part 25.
Where does the weather come from?
Open-Meteo, using the coordinates of your home water. It updates whenever you have signal.
My map is blank.
Map pictures need a connection, so try again when you have signal. Your spots and ramps still show in the meantime.
How do I back up, or move to a new phone?
Sign in to iCloud on your iPhone and Boatie backs up by itself. On a new phone, install Boatie, sign in to the same iCloud, then go to More, Backup, Restore from iCloud.
How do I cancel my subscription?
On your iPhone go to Settings, tap your name, then Subscriptions, then Boatie. Cancel at least 24 hours before it renews. Cancel before the 30 day free trial ends and you won't be charged.
I've paid but Boatie is asking me to pay again.
On the paywall tap Restore Purchases, and make sure you're signed in with the same Apple Account you paid with.
How do I get a refund?
Apple handles the payments, so refunds go through Apple at reportaproblem.apple.com.
Are the rules and fish limits right?
We check them against Maritime NZ, MPI and council pages, and every rule shows the date it was last checked. Rules change, so check the official source before you head out. If something's out of date, email us and we'll fix it fast.
A ramp or fuel spot is wrong or missing.
Email us the name and what's wrong. Ramps and fuel stops marked as community data come from OpenStreetMap and are still waiting on a check from us.
What about my privacy?
There's no account, and no ads or tracking. Your stuff stays on your phone and in your own iCloud. Full details are in the privacy policy.

OpenStreetMap data (ODbL)
Boatie's ramp and fuel locations start from OpenStreetMap data. The OpenStreetMap based databases that ship inside the app are offered here under the Open Database Licence (ODbL) 1.0:
- ramps-national.json, boat ramps (1,367 records)
- fuel-national.json, fuel docks (4 records)
Data © OpenStreetMap contributors. You can copy, share and adapt these files if you credit OpenStreetMap and contributors, and keep any database you build from them under the ODbL too. The ramp file includes ramp names we made up from nearby place names, and regions we've corrected. Boatie's own checked ramp and fuel details live in separate files and aren't part of this offer.
