Boatie Terms of Use

Last updated: 14 October 2026

Read this bit first

Boatie is a guide to help you plan your day. It is not navigation advice, so navigate with proper charts. Check the MetService marine forecast and the Maritime NZ rules, and make your own call. The skipper is responsible for the boat and everyone on it.

These terms cover the Boatie iPhone app, made by Kyle Imeson in New Zealand. By using Boatie you agree to them.

Boatie is a guide

Boatie is a guide for boaties, and you navigate with proper charts and your own judgement. The Day for it score, the weather, the tides and the rules are there to help you plan, and the call on the day is yours.

  • Check the MetService marine forecast before you go, and look at the water.
  • Check the rules with Maritime NZ and your regional council. Fishing rules come from MPI. Rules change, and the official source wins.
  • Tide predictions in Boatie are not official tide tables.
  • Forecasts can be wrong, so make your own call. You're the skipper, and you're responsible for your boat and everyone on it.

Emergencies

The Emergency screen helps you call for help and read out a Mayday. It needs your phone, battery and signal, and any of those can fail, so don't rely on Boatie as your only way to call for help. Carry proper safety gear like lifejackets, a VHF radio and a distress beacon. In an emergency call 111, or *500 for Coastguard, or use VHF channel 16.

Subscription

Boatie comes with a 30 day free trial, then it's NZ$39 a year or NZ$3.99 a month. Your subscription renews by itself until you cancel, and Apple takes the payment through your Apple Account. To cancel, go to Settings on your iPhone, tap your name, then Subscriptions, and do it at least 24 hours before the current period ends.

The Emergency and safety screens stay open to everyone, subscription or not.

The subscription is covered by Apple's standard Licensed Application End User Licence Agreement. Apple handles payments and refunds. See reportaproblem.apple.com for refunds.

Using Boatie

You can use Boatie for your own boating. Please don't copy the app, pull it apart or use it for anything unlawful. The Boatie name, icon and our own content belong to Kyle Imeson. Open data inside the app stays under its own licence, listed on the support page.

Your data

Your trips, spots, boat details and photos are yours. They live on your phone and in your own iCloud, so look after your backups. Our privacy policy explains what the app does with your information.

Liability

We do our best to keep Boatie accurate, but we can't promise it's always right, up to date or available. To the extent the law allows, we aren't liable for loss, injury or damage that comes from using Boatie or relying on it. Nothing here limits your rights under the Consumer Guarantees Act 1993 or any other law that can't be waived.

Changes

We may update these terms, and the date at the top will change when we do. If you keep using Boatie after that, you accept the new terms.
